Hey there friends,
I imagine each of us has a date when “Christmas” will begin – you might be traveling somewhere, waiting for someone (yes!), finishing a big project, wrapping things up at work – there’s always something that tips you into the quiet days of good food, naps, being with family and friends, reading FICTION.
My day is Friday. Casa Viva Christmas event? Check. First semester of 8th grade with Jadmin? Almost check. Field Institute email correspondence? Almost check. Baking and cooking for Casa Viva staff party? Check. Filling the house with good food for my men? Not yet. I’m almost there.
I’ll be taking a few weeks away from the computer, so if you have any updates you want to send, try and write this week. And do be thinking about next year. Shall we continue? Most posts are only read by a few of you, so I’ll be praying about this space in December and January. Send your thoughts on that as well.
Enjoyed this list today, you can read it here.
Feliz Navidad dear ones!
Heard from sweet Gladys that Ryan Matteo is here! Please be praying for this new little one, and his parents and siblings.
Headed up the mountain to find our Christmas tree! Yes, we’re a bit late, so looking forward to a house filled with lights and candles and Christmas colors. Want to come over to bake cookies? It’s 85 degrees here today.
Hey there sweet friends.
I’ve had a difficult 24 hours, been in a bit of a funk. Have you ever landed in a difficult spot? So I ended up enjoying a marvelous early morning drive with a view of the mountains and the rising sun before me, and then later, while drinking fresh, hot coffee, I read these words from Henri.
Dear friends, I want you to hear this: what is said of Jesus is said of you. I know this can be hard to affirm. You are the beloved daughter of God. Can you believe it? Can you hear it not only in your head through your physical ears but in your gut, hear it so that your whole life can be turned around? Go to the scriptures and read: “I loved you with an everlasting love. I have written your name in the palm of my hand from all eternity. I have molded you in the depths of the earth and knitted you in your mother’s womb. I love you. I embrace you. You are mine and I am yours and you belong to me.” You have to hear this, because if you can hear this divine voice speak to you from all eternity, then your life will become more and more the life of the beloved, because that is what you are.
When you start believing this, this spiritual knowledge will grow until it transforms your daily life. You will still have rejections and you will still have pains and losses, but you will live them no longer as a person searching for her identity. You will live them as the beloved. You will live your pain and anguish, your successes and failures, as one who knows who you are.
And that’s not easy. Most of us constantly fail to claim the truth of who we are. Henri Nouwen, Reading the Signs of Daily Life, Discernment
Hey there sweet friends,
In the spirit of all things rather unusual, I spent the FIRST Sunday of Advent going to Disney World with my little brother, his amazing family, and my oldest son. My other men sat in the Miami airport. It’s a long story, but that’s the way our Advent started this year.
How did your Advent season begin? I told you my story to encourage you – today is a new day, so is tomorrow. If you haven’t settled into this season yet, start this week. If you haven’t started playing Christmas music, begin. If you aren’t lighting candles that smell like pine and cedar, go buy some. If your oven has yet to bake some treats, why not this afternoon? We made our first official batch of Christmas cookies last night. Take a deep breath and turn your mind and heart and soul to the season.
If you’ve never ever set aside time for Advent reflections, this is the year.
Seek Him and you shall find Him.
And let’s also be praying for Gladys this week. Her fourth little one is due December 15.
We enjoyed a whirlwind trip over the long Thanksgiving weekend, so today is my “settling into” December day.
Tell me about your Decembers! I need some updates! Where will you be this month? Send me your news when you can.
Hey there friends,
Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Advent season, tomorrow is also December 1st – so it’s a delightful day to set aside your Thanksgiving leftovers and be present to the coming weeks.
I’m going to be reading this book through the Advent season, and I also have always enjoyed Ruth Barton’s writing on Advent as well. You can read more on that here.
Wish we could meet for a cup of coffee this month!
Send your updates when you can.
